Basic Sewing Skills Ribbon Bookmark

Tonight for our class activities we are going to review clothing and laundry basics and things you need to know to maintain your clothing. I am in charge of the basic sewing skills, so we are going to make this bookmark. It uses a piece of ribbon (whatever length you want to fit your book), a hair band elastic, a button and needle with thread.  (To prevent fraying, I used a lighter to melt the ends of the ribbon, just a tip!)

1st- We taught the girls to thread a needle, then we folded over one end of the ribbon, inserting the elastic band in the fold.
2nd- Then we used a basic stitch to close in the end with the elastic band.

3rd- On the other end of the ribbon, we sewed on a button.

You are now finished and read to read!

  4. can i use felt instead of ribbon so I can use a plastic needle with my students? What about using this as an idea for a headband?

  5. I have never tried felt, but you could definitely try it and see. :) It would probably work great as a headband too- and could be so adorable with cute buttons! Good luck on your creations!

    1. It really doesn't matter how long your ribbon is. I have found that a ribbon 10-15 inches in length works great for most books, however a larger book would need much longer ribbon.
